This is a thread about the sweet science, Boxing. Discuss latest boxing action from around the world. Talk about the big fighters, the biggest fights and anything else to do with boxing....

GOOD NEWS: We have a new British world champion, well done to Carl Froch after a superb points win over Jean Pascal in Nottingham. The 'cobra' won a thrilling fight to become the WBC super-middleweight champion. Its a massive win for the 31-year old and open doors to a potential fight with the likes of Jermaine Taylor, Kelly Pavlik or even Joe Calzaghe (a British super-fight perhaps). Well done to Froch biggrin.gif

Other news,
Amir Khan is back and won an easy comeback fight against a hand-picked opponent at the o2 in London. He beat Osian Fagan in two rounds in a one-sided fight. Nice and easy win to get him back into it biggrin.gif
Another fighter also back was Enzo Macarinelli. He returned after losing to David Haye by beating Matthew Ellis at Heavyweight. Ellis was a late replacement after 2 opponents dropped out meaning the fight was not for the WBO Cruiserweight title. Enzo had too much power for Ellis with some great body punching. He will fight for the title in February against Jonathan Banks.
A guy whose career may have ended, finally, is Audley Harrison. He lost to Prizefighter winner Martin Rogan on points to fall to his 4th consecutive defeat. Surely we've all had enough, just retire gracefully mate!

In a couple of hours time, the 'dream fight' between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao takes place in Las Vegas. Should be a cracking fight and I think Manny will will win to set-up a clash with our very own Ricky Hatton biggrin.gif

Comments on any of the boxing action are welcome happy.gif

Cheers. UT!

Well done to the Amir Kahn camp who succesfully hand picked an opponent he could beat, unlike the last effort.

For me, boxing is dieing with the arrival and success the UFC brand has had over the past couple of years, this is where the action is at for hardcore fight fans.

I cant believe how easily Pacquiao managed to beat de la Hoya last night, what a fighter that guy is. Hatton v Pacquiao next year (if it goes ahead) should be an awesome fight.

Also i agree, UFC has grown in popularity and i've grown a liking for it, beats all that fake shite on WWE anyday.

Well I think the curtain has come down on a truly great career. Oscar has been a legend of the game but I think it is time to retire. Talking of retirement, JC has given his most clearest hint that he is about to hang up his gloves. I think that is also the right decision, the guy has nothing else to achieve and with a 46-0 record, I'd also retire.

I thought Pacquiao was really good, threw lots and landed the majority. Showed great accuracy in his punches. I can't wait for Hatton v Pacman and I think Pacman will destroy Hatton just like PBF did. Oh well, atleast he is a likable fella laugh.gif Hatton seems like an improved fighter but for me, Pac is the best p4p fighter at the minute, if we are to believe that PBF has finally retired. I don't think Ricky stands a chance with such speed and power which Pac has shown time and time again.

In relation to UFC, I think it is akin to human cock-fighting and its popularity is a worry for all boxing fans. All we can do is promote boxing and get people interested. I thought Froch being on ITV1 the other night was a great coup for terrestrial TV and would lead to more people being made aware of the sport. Its a pity that guys like Amir Khan are signing contracts with Sky Box Office but I guess its all about the money

Looks like Haye has clinched a deal to fight Vitali Klitschko next Summer biggrin.gif Should be a good fight but can't see Haye getting past the big man. A massive gamble so early in his heavyweight career.

Oh AWESOME!!!!!! mellow.gif

Wonder where it'll be though, the O2 in London is most likely but i wonder, Las Vegas perhaps?

Either way, it'll be the biggest fight in the division since the Lennox Lewis days.

Caught a stream yesterday of the fight and couldn't believe how Valuev won. It was an awful fight with hardly any punches landed but Holyfield was alot more active than Valuev throughout the 12 rounds. I was shocked when Valuev was given the decision. Its the end of the road for Holyfield (about time) but for a champion, Valuev was a disgrace. THERE IS ONLY ONE DAVID HAYE!!!

From what i saw on the stream this morning, Holyfield should have won on the judges scorecards by at least 117-111, Valuev is a pathetic excuse for a champion. mad.gif

I didnt think Haye stood a chance against either of the Klitschko brothers but after watching Wladimir the other week I think Haye could cause him a lot of trouble, I know he won comfortably against Rahman but I think that was because of how piss poor Rahman was. Wladimir looked so slow I think Haye could take advantage of that. I've not watched Vitali for a good few years but I can't help thinking Haye may be going for the wrong brother.

Impressive pro debuts for a couple of the Olympian boxers last night. Frankie Gavin who didn't make the weight in Beijing looks a very good prospect and looked the best of the 3, Billy Joe Saunders was also impressive. I was not impreesed much with James De Gale, he easily won but didn't seem to be able to throw a punch properly and there was a lot of slapping from the Olympic Gold medalist, don't think the crowd were too impressed either as he was booed frequently

Agree with all of that. Degale reminded me of a certain Audley Harrison, lets hope the guy improves from here on in. Aside from the Olympians, cracking win for Martin Rogan against Matt Skelton to win the Commonwealth title. Rogan won prize-fighter on sky last year and also beat Harrison. The guy is an Irish Cabbie who won his 12th fight yesterday.. heart-warming story which could end in a fairytale World Title bid. He showed great heart yesterday, well worth the win! Also, a little gutted to see John Thaxton lose his title, that may be the end of him!

And next week, Amir Khan v Marco Antonio Barrera, possibly the most one sided fight since...well... Khan v Prescott.

Im going for Barrera with a 4th round KO
Dembas Strawberry Syrup
what a suprise, khan won after a 5th round stoppage by barrera's doctor

to be fair, that was one hell of a nasty cut he suffered

Not exactly, but he was basting about how "easy" it was

It would have been so different had Barrera not suffered that cut in the 1st
magtillidie
Was looking forward to hearing of Khan being put on his arse once again but it wasnt' to be and jusging by the clips on SSN it seemed like a cracking fight. Oh well we'll have to put up with Khan's huge ego for a bit longer.

Its shocking how they are talking about a world title fight for the kid when he beat an aged, bleeding and one-eyed Barrera. I'd personally like to see him have a rematch with Breidis Prescott to see how much he has improved since he lost to the guy in 54-seconds two fights ago. All this title talk at this stage is crazy and Khan will soon realise that at the world level, it is not as easy as it sounds. He has not has the right upbringing, having struggled domestically and not even attempted to challenge at the European level. His progression has been unorthodox and that could lead to his ultimate downfall.

Lets hope so eh? Can't stand the cocky little fuck and Barrera was way past his best, which i guess makes this another hand picked fight.

Boxing is a dying sport anyway, UFC is where it is at now.
magtillidie
Just seen the Hatton fight, really think he needs to give up now, he can't box with the best and he can't take a punch.

I watched the re-run of the Carl Froch fight on ITV on Saturday and have to say what a comeback, he looked out of it on points before a great 12th round KO.
Silicon Sweetheart
I saw the highlights on the news. In other words I saw the knock out. I didn't realise until much later that it came within the first two rounds. Tut tut. What a poor show. Hatton should have retired before he got shit.

If their pro debut's were anything to go by, tomorrow nights boxing should be decent. Frankie Gavin & Billy Joe Saunders are back in action for their 2nd fights after impreesive victories in their 1st. Also on the bill is James deGale who was far from impressive last time out, probably thinks he's untouchable because he has an Olympic Gold.

All 3 looked OK, but i just hope for their sake they dont do an Audley

The really big fight though comes soon, probably the most one sided fight ever seen, HAYE v KLITSCHKO

Forget the olympians, its all about one man tomorrow, the Irish cabbie Martin Rogan. He takes on Sam Sexton after having beaten both Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton. If he beats Sexton, id like to see him take on Danny Williams and victory over Williams could well lead to a world title shot. Thats a fairytale story.

Re Hatton, he should retire now because twice now, he has fought the best p4p and twice, he has been outclassed. You can question that if he can't mix it with the best, then why carry on? He is a shot fighter and should retire. As for Pacman, PBF is back and Pacman v PBF is a fight the world of boxing is crying out for. Lets hope it happens because if it does, it will be a cracker!

A final point about a boxer who deserves the utmost respect for taking on the best and so far, showing no fear. Take a bow, Carl Froch. The man beat Jean Pascal in a thriller last year to claim the WBC super-middleweight title. He then defended his title, successfully last month by taking on the dangerous former undisputed champion Jermain Taylor. The Nottingham fighter went to Taylor's backyard in America and having been outclassed for 11 rounds, stunned the American with a 12th round flurry, leading to a stoppage with 14 seconds on the clock. Froch is now talking about a potential unification bout in the division by taking on the IBF champ. This, only in his 2nd fight as champion. Its crazy. So a big well done to Carl Froch! The man means business.

On their 1st viewing I think DeGale has a huge chance of becoming the new Fraudley. Going to start paying more interest to the young boxers, I've spent so long just folllowing Calzaghe & Hatton, leaving myself with nobody to watch now.

I'll miss the Haye fight as no way am I signing back up to Setanta but I think it promises to be a cracker.

I watched a repeat of that Froch/Taylr fight a few weeks back, my he is one hard battler. Out boxed and pulverized by Taylor in 11 rounds but Boxing is not all about domination, its a tactical battle, its about landing the right punch at the right time, and Froch proved that by flooring Taylor in the 12th. A very worthy and excelletn champion who now i hope will go on to get the sort of big money fight he deserves.

Watching it remined me of Hasim Rahman's wonderpunch against the great Lennox Lewis a while ago.

Steven Taylor is due to carry Amir Khan's WBA World light welterweight belt into the ring for his title fight against New Yorker Dmitry Salita.

Steven Taylor: "I'm helping his brother carry the belt out, and I'll be going into the ring with him before the fight.

"It will be a case of welcome to the ring for Dmitriy Salita! Then I'll be ringside so it will be a really good experience for me, but I don't want to be showing my face there unless we get a win (over Watford)."

I'm sure there'd be outrage if somebody said they fancied the Paki to win. I'm sure you could have said Salita or the American rather than having to having to single him out for being a Jew.

Anyway I think Khan will win within 6 rounds.

They normally train for around 3 months before a fight to get in shape, if he's looking at the summer that will give him 5-6 months to get it off, he should just call it a day now rather than put himself through it all again. Imagine what size he will be once he's been retired for a couple of years.
