Full Version: Shay Given - Solicitors Statement Issued

From Shay's lawyer Michael Kennedy:

"Shay is very despondent following the very poor performance of the team against Liverpool last weekend.

It was the lowest point of his football career and a performance that he would not wish to be repeated.

When he signed a new five-year contract in 2006 it was on the basis that the club would challenge for major honours, but on the present evidence all that he can see ahead with the turmoil on and off the pitch is a battle for survival.

Having served the club loyally for over 11 years, Shay feels compelled to consider his position in the light of the interest being expressed in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham."

So, it looks like he is going. I know Harper is good, but Shay has been the best thing about a bad defence for many years. Without him the chance of winning anything are pretty much out of the window, and relegation looms ever larger.

Here are the first few links on this.

Best Keeper we have ever had!!! Absolutely gutted he may be leaving. If this is what he wants then good luck to the lad, he deserves to try to better himself and have a chance of winning something wacko.gif
Michael_88
Can't say I blame him.

Absolutely gutted, even though we were absolutely shambolic.

Team is falling apart, don't think he'll be the last to go either......fuck.
BoredinKuwait
If we are very short of cash, then he is the obvious player to cash in on. We'd get decent money and already have an able replacement and good prospects coming through. He's a fine shot stopper but is neither vocal enough nor dominates the box well enough. If his sale raised £8m (or some such) that was reinvested in some players that are more immediately needed, then that wouldn't be so bad. There is going to be a mass exodus in the summer, so perhaps it's time to get a premium price for a player like Given.
N`LouisNUFC
It's a shame, but if he wants out then let him go. He's a great keeper, but he does have his weakness's. Should get a decent fee for him. Not sure who we could get in to replace him - I wouldn't be too unhappy with Harper as number 1 for the rest of the season - but we would probably need another keeper with a bit of experience. Ben Foster on loan maybe.

I don't think he has done us any favours releasing a statement though. If he wants to go, why doesn't he just get his angent onto finding a new club - why put the club in even worse light and say these things.
Exiled Toon
Fuck - First Milner then Given!

I know that many on here see Milner's sale as a 'good piece of business' - clearly Capello sees something that you don't.

If we cash in on Given in another 'good piece of business' and perhaps N'Zpgbia or maybe Bassong, no doubt Ashley's balance sheet will be much improved.

Until we get relegated mad.gif

Perhaps we could cash in on Owen, Martins, Beye, Taylor and Gutierrez, then hope that Wise conjours up adequate replacements rather than a few more Xisco and Gonzales type flops
w33d
couldn't get any worse!!

If Given goes Wise want his nuts cutting off then they should be stuffed up Ashley's arse. mad.gif

Does anyone really think if we sold him and got then went out and spent what we received we'd spend it well?
UmarToon
Don't blame him at all. If I was in his position, I would have moved on a lot earlier. The club is in an awful state and Shay has a right to move on. I think if Shay goes then Owen will also go, NUFC is crumbling sad.gif
Johnthebrief
It's entirely understandable from his point of view.

And I see Harper's not yet been tied into a new contract doh.gif

So we're going to lose Given, Zog, Owen and who knows who else.

i dont think shay is going anywhere, i DO think he's sending a signal to ashley etc, putting the frighteners on. When a senior player comes out and says this is bad, he's breaking ranks and speaking for the team. the real message is get this sorted by summer or there is a whole bunch of us going......
Whitley Mag
This is just hilarious. Wish Freddy had never left.

Roll on the fucken bus to Hull tomorrow (y).
UmarToon
Most reports say we will get around £8m for him and for me that it not good enough. In todays market, I think Shay would be worth around £12-15m and we should demand nothing less.
Black country toon
I don't blame him, but would be extremley annyoed if he went to tottenham or man city who are currantly no better than us.
without a doubt the best keeper in the premiership, but this could start the exodus, and if owen leaves aswell we will have no good players left!
Dembas Strawberry Syrup
Im not suprised at this, if he does leave then good luck to him, he deserves better than the shower of shite he's been put behind in the last 11 years, although this time, it looks like we have 2-3 decent defenders now (Bassong, Beye, Coloccini most of the time) but you can fully understnd his frustration especially after that mauling by Liverpool. but wehshould be asking for nothing less than £12million otherwise the buying club will have got the bargain of the century. Then we can reinvest that cash in players that we desperately need starting with 2 new full backs.

If the worst happens, then getting Steve Harper to sign a new deal would take on huge importance, but also we are blessed with a strong line up of keepers excluding shay.

STEVE HARPER: Given's understudy for the last 10 years and a loyal servant to the club, has never let us down when called upon
TIM KRUL: Currently on loan at Carlisle, only had one game for us but it was a teriffic match winning display away at Palermo
FRASER FORSTER: Currently on loan at Stockport, looks fantastic from what we've seen of him in the reserves
OLE SODERBERG: Reportedly Sweden's next goalkeeping star, too young and inexperienced at the moment though
emres little flicks
Wonder if the money will be invested like the Milner money mad.gif

Asset stripping again Ashley.
Nufc Navan
When I was growing up supporting the Toon, he was in goals most of the time. For me, I would/will be absolutely gutted to see him make world class saves for any other team (apart from Ireland biggrin.gif ). Best of luck to him if he does leave. He has been a loyal servent.

Yeah, I agree with those sentiments too, but I personally think he's worth more than that to us. If he wants to leave (which isn't certain) we should bleed the purchasing club dry.

For me, a premium price would be in the £12m-15m bracket. It might not be realistic or achieveable, but if it was a choice between £8m in the coffers and keeping Given, then I wouldn't sell.

Can anyone imagine why this would be the case? we're "debt free" aren't we? unsure.gif

Or maybe Ashley is just an asset stripper......one things for sure, no club has ever "moved forward together" to quote him when he said he was taking the "for sale" signs down by selling their best players.

Communication between fans and the powers that be at the club, and between them and the players are a complete joke.....JFK on New Yers Eve:

QUOTE

"He won't be leaving - he has no interest in that whatsoever. He loves the football club.

"He's part of the city and that suits us because he's a world-class goalkeeper. He's very happy here, he's very comfortable at Newcastle United."

Then a day later our longest serving player who is one season away from breaking the all time appearance record for the club effectively says "the fuckin place is a basket case and I can't wait to get out".......a good advert for any players our Executive Director (Football) may be currently trying to recruit to the club.

Just to clarify for people a player saying he is a bit pissed off doesnt mean he can just walk out of the door.

Given is on a long term contract so I think people are jumping the gun a little talking as if he has already left.

Hes not happy with things at the moment but who the hell is. Id be very suprised if he left before the end of the season although I suppose you never know.

Id be gutted if he left but as long as he went somewhere decent (ie Arsenal not wannabe clubs like Spurs or City) then id wish him all the best.

Maybe im being stupidly optomistic but if Ashley really is looking at getting back in the fans good books then I very much doubt he would sanction the sale of arguably our best player in January unless somebody offered something ridiculous and Shay really wanted out.
Roy Aitken`s Debut
Sorry to make this thread sound like a broken record but yes I would be gutted if he went and no I would not blame him one bit. He has urged the board time and time again for a sensible and concerted effort to improve our team and we have been going backwards for the past five years at least. Supporting the Toon is more about heartbreak and disapointment than pride and joy these days.

If he goes I wish him all the best and hope the board see this as a sign of things to come. Which they won't, the short sighted useless ** insert profanities of your choice**.
Gala
A very good goalkeeper yes but the best in the Prem no way.

All this stuff about him being a good shot stopper is crap. Just about every goalkeeper is a good shot stopper - watch MOTD during FA Cup weeks like tomorrow night and there will likely be some great saves from a virtual unknown keeper from a 2nd or 3rd division team. Good goalkeeping is not just shot stopping because they all make spectacular saves and what makes a great keeper is dominating the box and making the forward doubt himself.

Cech is still the best in the Prem though not as good as he was.

Well from where I'm sat it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.....he was prepared to let KK walk away at huge risk to his investment so letting a mere player (in his eyes) go wouldnt cause him too many sleepless nights. Thats what you get for having a compulsive gambler for an owner.
Whitley Mag
If a bid of £5m or more comes in, it will be accepted. Less wage bill (of which Shay is on a considerable bit) and more money for Ashley to drain out of the club.

Expect no replacement to be made and for the money not to be re-invested back into the club.

For the record, i think Shay Given is a bit of a prick if he has come out with this, whenever the chips are down he is always the first one to run off to the press. How many times has it happened when he has been 2nd choice behind Harper and has gone straight to the papers with transfer request threats.

Personally, whilst being a good shot stopper (arguably in the top 3 in the country), his command of the box is sloppy at best.

I don't think it will be a great loss but it sticks in the throat that Ashley will be ripping more money out of the club with his sale.

Hmm I can see why you would think like that Kitson and lets be honest none of us know really what the hell goes on at the club but for me I dont think that even Ashley is stupid enough not realise what relegation would mean for this club and selling Shay would be a massive step towards this. Even if he doesnt give a shit about the club in terms of his investment relegation would be a disaster.

For that reason alone I cant see Given leaving and if he did go for a massive sum then surely he wouldnt be stupid enough to not reinvest the cash.............................

I couldn't give a feck if we sell him to Hull, we've got Steve Harper & Tim Krul. Blah blah blah.....

Futher details of Kinnear's response have emergered:
QUOTE
Speaking at his press conference before tomorrow's FA Cup tie at Hull, Kinnear said: "I'm not sure of the facts of what was said, or how it was interpreted, but what I would say is that Shay Given is contracted to this club until 2011.

"He is our player and he will stay our player. I'm not interested at all (in selling him). I want to clear that up.

"He is integral to our team, and the best goalkeeper in the league. As far as I am concerned he will stay our player.

"He will start tomorrow. This is a distraction, but I will focus on the football."

Kinnear had a long meeting with the Republic of Ireland international when he arrived for training this morning, and the 62-year-old was positive at the outcome of their talks.

He went on: "I had a long chat with Shay. We had a cup of coffee and had an hour together.

"He is fine, and he wants to do what is best for this club. He will do the best he possibly can tomorrow."

As far as Kennedy's statement was concerned, Kinnear went on the offensive.

He revealed the club has contacted the lawyer and sought clarification over the issues raised.

"No one has contacted me about Shay Given. As far as the three clubs is concerned it's all hearsay."

Taken from the Shields Gazette

A good result tomorrow may change things for Shay, but then again, maybe not. If we lose and concede a bunch of goals, then he'll probably be off...?
Black country toon
JK interview just in on SSN, saying he's going nowhere, he doesn't want to sell his best players, shay is contracted till 2011 and thats the last he'll speak on the matter.
Wether he can stop shay from leaving if an offer comes in is yet to be seen but he certainly seemed admant that shay was going nowhere if he had anything to do with it.

I'd hate to see Given leave as I think he's kept us in this league quite a few of the seasons that we've struggled, however if Man City are prepared to offer silly money then I think it's worth cashing in. I wouldn't be surprised with the money Man City have to throw around that they may even pay upto £15m, although Joe Hart + £8m-£10m should be good enough.
Big Bad Titus
I really dont understand why Citeh are after a keeper - Joe Hart is a great young keeper from what ive seen and im yet to see him make a massive error that has cost them a goal or anything - its having the likes of Michael Ball and Fatty Dunne in front which I would say is the problem, Richards has hardly covered himself in glory this season either.

If I was Joe Hart id be pretty pissed off seeing them linked with all these keepers because lets be honest the likes of Given, Buffon etc would only be going there to be first choice.

I think its really more to do with City flexing their financial muscle and buying these kind of players because they can.

I can see them going down the Chelsea route and just stock piling good players so nobody else can have them.

There is a lot of calls for us to get a Billionaire in to splash the cash etc but ill be honest these clubs who just start playing fantasy football bore me and just ruin the game. Oh definitely Yella, I wasnt dissing all foreign owners but the fact is he seems a one off really. Hes gone in there and stayed in the background and supported the manager and its paying off.

Ideally id like the club to stay in English ownership but if it was to go foreign you would be hoping for a Lerner rather than a Glazer or Gillett but unfortunately I dont think there are many Lerners about.
