All British/Scottish interest is over, Murray was thumped by Gonzalez today and also Laura Robson was beatin in 3 sets in her 2nd round match in the juniors by a clay court specialist.
Black country toon
two epic matches today, nadals conquorer robin soderling (23rd seed) came from 4-1 down in the final set to beat fernando gonzalez 6-3 7-5 5-7 4-6 6-4.
and in the other semi federer came through a 5 setter against del potro, del potro is shaping up to be asn immense player and I wouldn't bet against him becoming no.3 ahead of murray and djokovic, anyway I hope federer clinches his 1st roland garos title because he deserves it

You said though he was THE greatest, i could name a good few sportsmen i would consider greater than Roger Federer, and you've mentioned 2 of them, i would also rate the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, Sir Steve Redgrave and Tanni Grey-Thompson above Federer for example, but thats just my opinion.

I would consider him though to be one of (if not the) greatest tennis players of all time, that there is no denying, definitely up there with the likes of Agassi, Borg and Laver
Michael_88
And Sampras?

14 Grand Slams...all four surfaces. Sampras never won on all four surfaces, and he won the most grand slams.

I think its undisputable that he's the greatest tennis player of all time.

its is a shame aboput nadal becuase I think federer was redy to beat him this year and prove he is the greatest, I think murray will get to the final, he looks in good shape and wins matches comfortably now, my tip for the tournament is andy roddick, he's looked pretty good on grass so far this year.
as for womens tennis (second rate tongue.gif) apart form venus and serena the top 15 consists of 5 russians 2 serbians 1 pole and 2 slovaks, the amount of eastern europeans is just getting ridiculas now!
also I dont think laura robson stands a chance against hantuchova.

You never know, i really fancy her to cause an upset Hantuchova, also Keothavong has looked good too this year breaking into the worlds top 50 although she was very unlucky to be drawn against the number 1 seed in the very first round of the french open, she has a much more favourable route this time around and i fancy her to reach at least the 3rd round.

well laura robson put up a good fight against the former world no.5, winning the first set, she is extremely good for a 15 year old. meanwhile queens finalist and 17th seed james blake is out whihc is a suprise

Really impressed with Robson, the fact she managed to take a set against Hantuchova was fantastic, looking at her face when she won, you can tell she was releived.

Still won though, albeit unimpressively

as for the rest of the brits, well it was a shit day

ALEX BOGDANOVIC - Thumped by Thomas Berdych in straight sets
DAN EVANS - Beaten in straight sets by Nikolay Davydenko
JOSHUA GOODALL - Played brilliantly to take Michael Llodra to a deciding set, which he lost

ANNE KEOTHAVONG - Capitulated from being set point up in the 1st set against Patricia Mayr to lose in straight sets
KATIE O'BRIEN - Also lost but played well after taking Ivita Benesova to a deciding set
GEORGIE STOOP - Nearly caused the shock of the round but lost the deciding 3rd set to 7th seed Vera Zvonareva

Not all bad news though

ELENA BALTACHA - Currently 1-1 in sets and 5-4 up in the final set against Alona Bondarenko who is the highest ranked unseeded player in the womens draw
Dembas Strawberry Syrup
Infact change that, Elena Baltacha just won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, a superb performance against someone 70 places higher in the world rankings. yahoo.gif

She now plays another unseeded player, Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium

Nope, Wimbledon justifies itself. No-one outside of Britain makes the connection between Britain having (or not having) a grand slam and the lack of high ranking British tennis players.

It's been said for years though. Henman was a rich kid whose parents paid his way through all the tennis academies. I'm not sure about Murray, but it's clear that he's not a product of a coherent British programme to develop good young tennis players, because there isn't one.

Maybe they aren't used to judging in bright sunshine.

Federer wiping the floor with this Lopez fella. All a bit too easy, he'll have tougher tests in the later rounds. I think they said Soderling was up in round 3 and then it could be Tsonga in the round after that... I don't think he'll win those matches as easily.

To be fair to the women, most of them did not disgrace themselves against some tough opponents, and Keothavong was not a wildcard, she qualified automatically by being the world number 51. And Baltacha is guaranteed a world top 100 position, and if she wins her 2nd round match, she'll have done enough to earn an automatic berth at the US Open and be close to the top 80.

As for the men, well apart from Goodall, they didnt impress me at all.

didnt see it but i heard it was a thriller

he plays Ferrero next then either Roddick or Hewitt in the semis

Good win too for Laura Robson as well
The Inspiration
Well played to Murray. Can't stand the bloke but it would be nice to see him win Wimbledon, though that's unlikely based on today's performance. Wawrinka put up a great fight and did some stunning aces.

Can't believe I'm making some form of commentary (if you call it that) on a tennis match...
