Yep, points will not decide the F1 World Championship this season, nope, it'll be WINS and not traditionally points that will decide it this year, points will still be awarded though but will only decide the title in a tie break when wins are equal.

If the new system was in place from the start, the world champions list would be a hell of a lot different

Its worth noting too that another points system was in discussion during that meeting put forward by FOTA which was simply this

12 - 9 - 7 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 plus a bonus point for pole

That i think would have been perfect but i guess Bernie wanted his medal idea implemented so badly that the FIA went for compromise

Its simply the worst ides thay've had the nerve to come up with since they scrapped the dropped scores rule.

Heres the full list of what was discussed

This alternative ranking business is pretty futile - with a different scoring system the drivers/teams would have used different tactics in the races leading to different results.

I don't know much about F1 but doesn't that mean the season could potentially be decided in the first 9 races, making the rest pointless? unsure.gif

I am not a great F1 fan, as I feel it has become all too predictable. Engine performance, car set-up, team tactics and pit-stops are more likely to win races than driving skill (don't take this to mean that the drivers aren't skillful).

Perhaps by counting wins rather than points, we will see more 'racing' and fewer processions, where the drivers would rather settle for a points finish than risk finishing by actually pushing for a win.

I remember hearing a suggestion that points gained should decide the position on the starting grid - with those with most points at the back.
Now that would make it interesting!

Why is Bernie so intent on runining F1. This is just stupid, to me it's just stupid, if he really wants the winner of races to have more advantage then just give higher points for a win. I know some people find F1 boring anyway but really how exciting would it be if someone were to win the 1st 9 races, that would be the season finished, nobody could ever win it that early with points.

I was in favour a lot of the 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 system put forward by the teams association, awarding more points for a win makes total sense. Hell i'd even prefer a simple tweak to the current system awarding 7 points for 2nd instead of 8.

Anyway heres part 4 of my season preview

It's madness, Massa had the most wins last season (6) not likely but if he hadn't scored a point in all the other races he could have won the championship with 60 points compared to Hamiltons 98 points.

There comes a point in a race sometimes when you know you can't catch the leader so you just concentrate on bringing the car home, this rule won't change that one bit, if you were close to the car in front you'd always try your hardest to catch and overtake and this won't change either, so why the hell bring in this daft rule it will not encourage overtaking.

Spot on happy.gif

It wont change anything in my view and Martin Brundle seems to agree

Heres what F1 has had in terms of points systems

1950/1959: 8-6-4-3-2 (1 point for fastest lap)
1960/1985: 9-6-4-3-2-1
1985/1990: 9-6-4-3-2-1 (Race calendar set at 16 races, best 11 points finishes only counted)
1991/2002: 10-6-4-3-2-1
2003/2008: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1

Good on FOTA, i have a feeling now that it wont happen at all.

It's been axed, at least until 2010.

The teams usually get their way though eventually so i can see this ides being shelved altogether in favour of FOTA's idea
