England elect to bat first at Trent Bridge. Its overcast, so this should be a real test for our opening batsmen

Good first session

Good first session

Nicely poised at tea

Good response from Collingwood and Morgan. Hope they can keep it up...

Pardon my ignorance, but how do clouds make it harder for the batsmen? Just light levels or is it humidity in the pitch or something?

Yeah, right on both accounts. Think humidity helps the ball to swing but not completely sure on the science of it all. I play cricket as a seam/swing bowler so I really should know a bit more...

Think this explains it if you're interested - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_bowling

Here we go. Unless the Pakistani bowlers up their game, England should only have to bat once.

Great maiden century by Morgan with good support from Colly.

KP needs to buck his ideas up if he wants to play in the Ashes. Very poor again
The Inspiration
Great collapse from England. glare.gif
The Inspiration
England lose their last 6 wickets for 17 runs. Bit pathetic. Especially considering how many runs we could have got with Colly and Morgan at the crease at the start of the day.

Better bowl straight from the start and sounds like the pitch has wickets in it.

Stunning spell with the ball from Asif.

This is turning into a great test match

Not so great now... 41-4 indeed.

45-5 now. Morgan's knock looking even more impressive

I always find these kinds of tests totally unsatisfying. What can we learn about England's development when the opposition collapses so quickly? Well, not much. The batting still looks unreliable down the order, bowling looks good when the ball swings. But the ball won't swing in Australia, so that doesn't give us much. As for England's mental strength in the face of a determined and capable opponent - well they'll need to have lots of that in Australia, but they haven't really had to show any of it so far here.

Disappointing.

Dear oh dear, another wicket. 47-6. Can't see them getting three figures.

On the plus side, Pakistan gave Australia a run for their money. You can only beat what's in front of you

Well, a bit of a recovery from Pakistan. Looks like they will make it to 100, maybe even avoid the follow-on.

I'm wondering whether Strauss will elect to bat anyway, if only to give KP some time at the crease

Well, bit of a recovery from Pakistan, now 145-8 and they only need 10 runs to avoid the follow-on. Quite surprising, but it makes the match much more interesting.

Hmm, well I say that but... Broad gets his wicket, Kaneria clean bowled. Sounds like Broad deserved that. 145-9, the last man will have to make 10 runs for Pakistan to avoid the follow-on.
The Inspiration
Broad strikes me as one of those bowlers who is pretty average a lot of the time, but occasionally brilliant. He's a top class one-day bowler already, but needs to work on his consistency to be a top Test bowler. His batting also frustrates me - he looked so promising at the start of his England career and there was talk of him being 'the new Freddie'. However, he never seems to get runs now and always looks sloppy at the crease and now bats nine (as opposed to seven), though admittedly Swann is also very capable with the bat.

Great day for England though, despite that shocking start. Hopefully they can build on this tomorrow.
The Inspiration
I know Pietersen's recent Test form has been pretty awful, but he's not alone and shouldn't be alone in getting criticism.

Supposedly future captain Cook's top score this summer is 29 or something like that, apparently. Not great really. Pietersen shouldn't be singled out for criticism when there are other players badly out of form.
The Inspiration
Great day for England then, thanks largely to a superb century from Prior.

Pakistan were never going to chase down 434 on this pitch and now they're 15-3 so it looks like we're set for a resounding victory.

Now, if only our top-order had a bit more consistency...

Cook has been poor this Summer but Pietersen's form has been dreadful for most of this year.

Excellent bowling from Anderson - 11 for 115

True that, but he shouldn't be singled out and neither should have a secure place in the team. Also Pietersen he did win us the Twenty20 World Cup. Credit where it's due.

Also great win for England... got back home about half an hour ago and was shocked to find we'd already beaten them. Anderson super once more. wacko.gif
Exiled Toon
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat. Perfect conditions for swing. Butt must have a deathwish
Exiled Toon
I can't understand why Pakistan elected to bat. 29 for 4. Oh dear
The Inspiration
Good start for England...

Pakistan seemingly trying to get their lowest ever Test score for the third innings running. Impressive feat, I must admit.
Exiled Toon
64 for 8 now. Embarrassing!
Exiled Toon
Pakistan all out for 72. Four wickets each for Broad and Anderson.

England off to a good start with fours for Strauss and Cook

Dorty Mag
When they beat the Aussies a couple of weeks ago, a Pakistani supporter held up a banner saying: 'Watch out England, here we come' bbc laugh.gif

I've never laughed so much since the West Indian fan held up his banner proclaiming: 'It's a Blackwash' after they had mauled England 5-0 laugh.gif

Great start for England in the third test. doh.gif

Judging by how England are batting currently and how Pakistan have batted throughout the series... then that could well be the case. I think we'll do a lot better in the second innings though.

83-6. doh.gif

94-7 now.

I'm only following this test by the BBC scoreboard thing, and with the number of catches taken by the WK I'm assuming the wicket is the same as the previous tests this summer with the ball swinging a lot.

Seen a little bit of it online (don't have Sky) and yes I think that's the case. Strauss elected to bat which doesn't sound like a wise idea. Prior and Broad look to be scoring quickly as expected, so hopefully they can keep this up...
Some like it Hottiger
Bit of a recovery (touch wood), 162-7 with Prior on 37 and Broad on 32. Good performance by these two, hopefully they can both get half-centuries which would take the score above 200. At least it's not a totally embarrassing score, and given Pakistan's batting so far this series, the match certainly isn't lost.
The Inspiration
Good recovery from Prior and Broad to get England to 180-7. Hopefully these guys can use the good batting conditions this evening and get some big individual scores. Nice to see Broad getting runs as I've found him a very frustrating batsman as he has a lot of ability.
The Inspiration
231-9

Shame Broad didn't get fifty but he did bat well. Prior doing excellent on 82* and another century would be great.

Looks like a completely different player already. Positive play when he's out of form has worked well. This is only a stepping stone mind.
Exiled Toon
110 for Cook - not a bad knock.

It's KP's turn to redeem himself now - he should be able to build a good score on this track if he keeps his concentration

Trott needs to up his run rate if we have any chance of winning this test. 36 from 125 balls - is he trying to bore Pakistan into submission?
The Inspiration
Jonothan Trott doing his very best impersonation of Geoffrey Boycott.

I won't be complaining if he gets a good score, but it's a bit boring at the moment!
The Inspiration
Good one Kevin.
Exiled Toon
Fucking hell - A spectacular collapse even by England's standards doh.gif

210-8

Pathetic collapse from the middle-order. A lead of only 135.

Come on Broad and Swann...

It will only be a win or a defeat. Most likely for us, a defeat. But there's always a chance, given how Pakistan have batted this series...
Dembas Strawberry Syrup
One word, pathetic

Well done to Cook on getting a long awaited ton but apart fromt hat, its just been a lauguable batting performance
