NUFC submitted a planning application 2 days ago to put up big signs the outside of the ground with the new ground name across them.
The whole application, including the drawings of what the signs will look like (click on the 'Documents' tab) is here:

"But the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months."
"Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything."
"But the plans were on display ..."
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
"That's the display department."
"With a flashlight."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
"So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'."

Link not working for me. Is this to remind everybody saying as I've not heard one person refer to the ground as "Sportsdirect.com@st James' Park" and nor do I expect to.

It's too long and I can't do anything about it, I don't think. If you copy & paste the link into your browser, it should work

So no other companies came wanting to sponsor the stadium then? As if there aren't enough sportsdirect.com ads in the stadium already.

Who cares really? Every football ground in the country is covered in sponsorship and nobody would give a shit if it said Puma, Pukka Pies, Northern Rock, McDonalds etc etc its only because its Sports Direct that people feel the need to moan about it.

Words of praise from Arsene Wenger
"When the FIFA delegation arrive in Newcastle this week, I hope they are stunned by the sight of St. James' Park and by the way it dominates the skyline - a sporting citadel, and the heartbeat of the city, in a city that breathes football.
"There, they have a love of the game that is remarkable. Nowhere else in the world can you travel into the centre of a town or city and find the football stadium squeezed between the streets where people live their lives, only to then put them on hold on a Saturday to watch their team play."
Would FIFA be as impressed by a huge "Sportsdirect.com@st James' Park" sign?

You serious? That's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard you say. When it was announced about a sponsorship everybody hated the idea. It wouldn't make a difference whether it was Northen Rock or Sports Direct, no body would like it.

I stick by my whole opinion of it when the story first broke - given the choice id rather they didnt do it but based on the fact that nobody will refer to it as that anyway for the sake of a few signs going up around the ground (a ground that is covered in sponsorship like any other anyway) im really not that bothered.

Really? I can't imagine the marketing department will be too happy at their logo being stretched like that - marketing people are very, very particular about their logos, typefaces, sizings etc.
Anyway - i don't like it, but then i hate advertising pretty much always.

It'll have been a spotty 16 yr old CAD Monkey, but the drawings are a just a representation of where the signs are proposed. 3 giant signs facing Barrack Rd and 3 facing Strawberry Pl. What name they'll have plastered across them will depend on whether or not MA can convince anyone to buy the naming rights, I'm guessing.

I've always known them as CAD jockeys.
